Wish it would look like this again: White Christmas at the Moltkeplatz
on the occasion of the open day of the UNESCO-Schule Essen on 26 Nov 2016, those students in their final year prior to their Abitur / graduation who had presented their temporary works at the sculpture´s green of the Moltkeplatz (see entry below dated 27 Sep 2016) - together with their arts teacher Volker Ullenboom - put on display their works (or pictures thereof) at the school. Most of the pictures showed the temporary works together with the permanent sculptures which had inspired them. More information here.

since early October 2016 the Italian artist Stefano Cagol participates in the Ruhr.Residence 2016 - Program, and, under that scholarship for a few weeks, lives and works in the Kunsthaus Essen. The program is organized by KunstVereineRuhr, the network of Ruhr District regional art associations. KaM is member of this network, and - as a local contact - provides support to the artist. During an event on 21 Oct 2016, Stefan Cagol presented first impressions of his work here, and - within a live performance - combined them with recordings of former projects.
Entries of all ten artists of the Ruhr.Residence 2016-Program can be found in their joint blog. Eight artists participate in the "GO" sub-project, providing for a stay of local artists outside of the Ruhr District, and two in the "RETURN" sub-project for non-locals to live and work in the Ruhr District area. For Stefano Cagol´s blog entries see here.
on 13 Oct 2016 Lutz Fritsch, whose work EIN•STAND/MONO•POLE is part of the Moltkeplatz sculptures ensemble, presented his work(s) at an artist´s talk "Von Ort zu Ort / From Place to Place" within his COSMOS exhibition in the Von der Heydt-Museum Wuppertal. Several KaM-members/-friends listened with great interest.

on 27 Sep 2016, some 55 students in their final year prior to their Abitur / graduation from the UNESCO-Schule Essen erected some 15 temporary works at the sculpture´s green of the Moltkeplatz. The public had been invited to the event. Together with their arts teacher Volker Ullenboom, and with support by KaM e.V., the students had previously dealt with art in public spaces, and specifically with the sculptures ensemble at the Moltkeplatz (see entries below on 23 Jun and later). On 27 Sep, the students presented their own works which were inspired by the Moltkeplatz and the sculptures present, or which dealt with or reflected on them. The Südanzeiger news paper had previously informed with an article of 24 Sep 2016, the online Lokalkompass here; and the WAZ news paper subsequently reported with an article of 27 Sep 2016, and the Südanzeiger with an article of 02 Nov 2016.

on 17 Sep 2016, there was the second guided tour for KaM of the "Kunsthaus NRW Kornelimünster" in Aachen-Kornelimünster. Dr Marcel Schumacher, head of the institution since April 2015, has been connected with the Moltkeplatz as curator of the KaM project "junge Kunst am Moltkeplatz / young Art At The Moltkeplatz". He had agreed to lead a group of KaM members thru his institution, for which we extend our special thanks.

In front of the main entrance to the former "Reichsabtei / Imperial immediacy abbey" building, the group of KaM members was "greeted" by artwork of Ansgar Nierhoff (represented at the Moltkeplatz with his work Paarweise / In Pairs), and Christian Forsen (who, in 2010, was the first artist of the KaM project "junge Kunst am Moltkeplatz / young Art At The Moltkeplatz", and took part in the action Kunst im Wohnraum / Art in The Living Room in Essen in that same year 2010).
More about this lively and most interesting guided tour here.
for 09 Sep 2016, the German president Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck, and Ms Daniela Schadt, by personal invitation (see here) had requested the presence of two residents of the Moltkeplatz at the annual Bürgerfest / citizens´ festival in the park of the president´s official residence Schloss Bellevue in Berlin. Both invitees have been active in the Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e.V. association as founding members and members of its board. Together with some 2.500 others - all active in charitable non-for-profit organisations or projects in Germany - and some additional 1.500 accompanying guests, they enjoyed some highly memorable hours from afternoon thru late at night ... in great weather, and in a beautiful setting.
In his address, welcoming his guests, and thanking them for their charitable work, the Bundespräsident referred to their ehrenamtliche Engagement für die Zivilgesellschaft (charitable and not-for-profit commitment to the civic society), also mentioning Menschen, die sich für den Erhalt von Kunstschätzen einsetzen (people who are committed to save art works). (Audio excerpt of the Bundespräsident´s address here).
KaM e.V. takes these words to also refer to its efforts, and gladly passes these words of gratitude of the Bundespräsident on to all members of the association KaM e.V., and to KaM´s supporters and sponsors.
Part of the Schloss Bellevue was open to the visitors during the festival. Towards the end a remarkable light show was projected onto Schloss Bellevue´s rear facade, and large fireworks were displayed. For some personal impressions of the Bürgerfest by the two KaM members see a video here (on youtube).
More to be found on Potsdam TV here, and at additional places on youtube (search youtube for Bürgerfest 2016 Bundespräsident or similar).
on 02 Sep 2016, a group of people of the Lehrstuhl für Elektronische Schaltungstechnik der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, during an outing in Essen, used the large white work "onda" of Martin Pfeifle to meet, rest, and refresh. Within a short introduction they were provided with some information about the Moltkeplatz and its sculptures ensemble.
on 29/30 Aug, and 01 Sep 2016, classes for three arts courses of grade 13 students of the UNESCO-Schule Essen were held by their arts teacher Volker Ullenboom at the sculptures park Moltkeplatz. Some of the students had previously been exposed to the sculptures and had gained some insight (see entry of 23 - 29 Jun 2016 below). Building upon this prior knowledge further information was provided and more discussions held. Such exchange is influencing the students´ plannings in respect of their own temporary works and art actions in public spaces like the Moltkeplatz.
on 23 Aug 2016, a set of aerial images of the Moltkeplatz were taken with a focus on the prominent
large 7 x 10 meters all white wooden work "onda" by Martin Pfeifle.

on Sunday 21 Aug 2016, some 25 members of the parish of the SELK Autonomous Lutheran Church of Bad Essen-Rabber (east of Osnabrück), and their pastor, Superintendent Bernd Reitmayer, visited the SELK Autonomous Lutheran Church at the Moltkeplatz. In the afternoon KaM e.V. led the visitors on a guided tour to the sculptures in the park, and provided some explanations of the art work present.

This work gives the impression of the layout of a nave with it´s centre line directed towards the SELK Autononous Lutheran Church at the Moltkeplatz on the opposite side of the street. In the picture left: Klaus Pahlen, pastor of the SELK parish Essen at the Moltkeplatz; 4th from left in the back: Superintendent Bernd Reitmayer of the SELK parish Bad Essen-Rabber. The two parishes are friends with each other.
on 19 Aug 2016, a group of some 20 people interested in art visted the sculptures ensemble at the Moltkeplatz. The event had been organized by Jörg Linnemann. Enjoying the lovely summer weather, the participants went on a guided tour provided by KaM, and had the chance to learn more about the sculptures ... and were also able to relax on the huge white sculpture "onda". For some of the visitors an optional guided tour through adjacent parts of the Moltkeviertel brought this visit to its end.
on 16 Aug 2016, the artist Martin Pfeifle once again came to have a look at his work at the Moltkeplatz. Martin Pfeifle, two friends of his, and KaM members spent some enjoyable time by the sculptures, relaxing on Martin Pfeifle´s work "onda", and exchanging ideas over a bottle of a local beverage.
during 23 thru 29 June 2016, five goups of students of the UNESCO-Schule (-School) Essen - one after the other - and their arts teacher Volker Ullenboom came to visit the sculptures ensemble at the Moltkeplatz. There were introductions given, and both discussions and group work held for the students to deal with some of the art works... including the temporary work "onda" by Martin Pfeifle ... and also about questions with respect to art in public spaces in general.
on 22 June 2016 the German-American artist Maria Nordman (in German Wikipedia here) visited the sculptures ensemble at the Moltkeplatz. Before travelling on she had sufficient time to see the sculptures, to briefly relax on Martin Pfeifle´s work "onda", and to exchange ideas on art in public spaces.
Maria Nordman was in Essen for the restoring and re-unveiling on 21 Jun of her work "Insel Werden 1984 - Heute" on the Brehm-Insel (-Island) in the Ruhr River at Essen-Werden. Her work there consists of two archways of different rock material. The re-unveiling was organized by the RuhrKunstMuseen regional group of museums, and sponsored by the Brost-Stiftung, and was followed by an artist talk in the Museum Folkwang; for WAZ/NRZ press articles see here and here. An additional work in Essen by Maria Nordman is the installation "La Primavera" at the UNESCO world heritage site Zeche Zollverein (a former coal mine).
Neighbours, friends of the Moltkeplatz, and everybody else interested in the arts had been invited (see here). The event was also announced in a WAZ/NRZ newspaper here.
There was good reason to celebrate: the re-erecting of the sculpture "Lebensgröße / Life Size" by Heinz Breloh four months ago (following some two years of absence), the exhibition of the temporary work "onda" by Martin Pfeifle a month ago ... and the 10th anniversiry of the establishment of the association Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e.V. in June 2006, ten years and two days ago.
More to read here (in German).
on 09 June 2016 an article by Dr. Marcel Schumacher, head of the "Kunsthaus NRW" in Aachen-Kornelimünster, and curator of this project, in respect of Martin Pfeifle´s temporary work "onda" has been added. For the text (in German) click here.
on 07 June 2016 the documentation for Frank Bölter´s "HOrigamiUSE" was published. "HOrigamiUSE" was the fourth temporary work within the series young Art at the Moltkeplatz / junge Kunst am Moltkeplatz. This work has been on display during June 2013 - May 2014.
The brochure´s size is A 5 portrait; it has 132 pages. The content includes a text by the curator Dr. Sabine Maria Schmidt, one "diary" each of Lisa Lambrecht-Wagenitz (as a neighbour of the sculptures park), and Frank Bölter (as the artist), and numerous pictures.

on 22 May 2016 the vernissage for "onda" by Martin Pfeifle was held. "onda" is the sixth temporary work within the series Young Art at the Moltkeplatz/junge Kunst am Moltkeplatz. Following the construction of the sculpture at the Moltkeplatz (see below), KaM had invited the public to this event (see here). Numerous persons came to attend: those interested in art, friends of the Moltkeplatz, members of the association KaM e.V., and others. Approx 200 persons came together for the afternoon.
KaM e.V. welcomed the participants, and introduced Mayor Franz-Josef Britz, who conveyed the greetings of the City of Essen, and Prof. Dr. Gerd Mahler (chair of the Essen city Jury on Art in Public Spaces). This was followed by the introduction of the artist and his work, presented by Prof. Dr. Harald Goebell. Prof. Goebell had agreed at short notice to provide this service in lieu of the curator Dr. Marcel Schumacher who was unavailable due to being sick (for the introduction click here). Despite some light rain showers all participants were able to use the time by the sculptures for discussions and conversations i.a. about the new temporary work. Across the street, the parish hall of the SELK Church had been opened, where drinks and snacks were available. Additional images here.
